It’s a fact – kids love rocks. Looking at colors and shapes, feeling different textures and even skipping them across the lake! Here are some quick facts you can share with your Junior Naturalist next time you’re out exploring.

Did You Know?

  1. Most rock is a mixture of minerals and bits of other rock.
  2. There are more than 4,000 different minerals.
  3. Though most minerals are small particles, some form large beautiful crystals, like diamonds and rubies.
  4. Quartz is one of the most common minerals in the Earth’s crust.
  5. Around 20 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered with mountains.
  6. There are mountains and mountain ranges in the ocean.
  7. Many islands are actually the tops of mountains.
  8. Rocks are constantly changing in what is called the rock cycle. It takes millions of years for rocks to change.
  9. There are actually some rocks that come from space called meteorites.
  10. Sedimentary rocks form layers at the bottoms of oceans and lakes.
  11. Layers of sedimentary rocks are called strata.
  12. Most fossils are found in sedimentary rock such as shale, limestone, and sandstone.
